Permit for scientific work

A valid research permit is required for any scientific work in Costa Rica. A growing number of journals ask for (and check) permit numbers before research can be published, and illegal research is a punishable offence in Costa Rica.

To make the process easier, the station sends a group request to the OSA Conservation Area twice a year. If you would like to be included in this request, please complete and submit the form at the bottom of this page and send it to us.

In order to be able to hand you your permit on time, we require:

Ω A passport photo in JPEG format (at least 1024 × 768 pixels) and two hard-copy passport photos (to be sent to the Department für Botanik und Biodiversitätsforschung, Rennweg 14, 1030 Vienna, Austria)
Ω A copy of your passport in JPEG format
Ω A copy of your curriculum vitae, in Spanish¹
Ω A description of your project in Spanish,¹ c. two A4 pages long, in Microsoft Word format
Ω A completed copy of this form

Submissions close on 01 May and 01 November each year.

n.b. A separate application is needed for genetic or biochemical research; If this applies to you, please contact the field station administrators.
The research permit costs US$80 (or US$60 for employees of the University of Vienna), which can be paid at the La Gamba Field Station. If you wish to send samples to Austria, please discuss this in good time to ensure their smooth transit.
